Quote Of The Day Server

summary: this page describes the QOTD server that is available through Zoe, and how to access it.

The following was lifted directly from [this email]. I coudn't make this up.

The restless team of jumpy computer elves behind most of ZOË's innovative features is very please to announce the immediate availability of a highly scalable and somewhat [RFC 865] compliant built-in QOTD server.

This unique new feature is universally accessible from this easy to type url:
telnet://localhost:10017

For optimal interoperability and zero configuration deployment, this breakthrough in cutting edge computer science technology is generously advertised through ZeroConf?'s DNS Service Discovery for all to enjoy on your local network:
ZOE._qotd._tcp.local.

Which was followed the next day by [this email]

Hello,

The elves wanted to share some additional informations regarding their latest juvenile prank: QOTD. Please indulge them.

The mighty QOTD server uses the same plain text format as FreeBSD?'s fortune. The elves would also like to confess that the default Murphy's laws cookies where unceremoniously shoplifted from fortune's cvs repository:

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/games/fortune/datfiles/

The elves feel very ashamed of themselves, but such is their mischievous nature. Please be forgiving.

The QOTD server expects to find its cookie jars under "<ZOE>/Library/QOTD/" with a ".qotd" extension. Feel free to provide your own, but be forewarned of the following potential
issue affecting some controversial cookies:

http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=79993

Sincerely,

Z's penitent team of sedated elves
